Turn your trip into an exciting adventure vacation
Instead of taking a typical tourist destination, you could do something different and explore an adventure vacation? From safaris to climbing mountains, there are many ways you can turn your trip into an unforgettable experience.
Because these tips are so different from the norm, you’ll have to prepare ahead of time. Read on to learn some tips for getting your mind, body, gear and home ready for adventure travel.
Prepare your body and mind
While the specifics of your trip with dictate your preparations, most adventure vacations will push your body’s strength and endurance. That’s why Austin Adventures recommends getting physically prepared. Make sure you start going for walks, jogs and bike rides in the weeks leading up to your departure date. Strength training can certainly help, but your focus should be on moving around since that’s likely going to be the focus of your adventure vacation.
Look at your itinerary and start doing smaller versions to get your body ready. If your trip will include some mountain climbing, then visit a local rock wall to practice what you’ll be doing.
If this is your first adventure vacation, then you might feel a bit intimidated by it all. That’s reasonable, but as Men’s Fitness explains, you can beat this feeling by compartmentalizing the trip. Don’t think about three days of hiking into and out of a canyon. Instead, think of it as a day of hiking into it; a day of camping; and then a day of heading home. By cutting the journey into smaller pieces, it’s less intimidating.
Essential gear for travel
An adventure vacation is a wonderful challenge to your body and mind, but you also need to have the right equipment. Bringing along the wrong shoes or a cheap tent can turn a fun experience into a disaster.
Condé Nast Traveler has a great list of essential gear for your adventure. Start with a hammock or hammock tent that’s easy to carry and serves as a great way to rest up. Staying hydrated is crucial on these trips, so bring along a quality water bottle. Mesh jackets can protect you from the elements while getting rid of sweat. A small but strong flashlight can really come in handy when night falls.

That’s why it pays to spend some time getting your house ready for your absence.
Home Advisor recommends that you secure your home before leaving for your adventure. Walk around your place and look for security risks. Adding some outdoor lighting can help a lot, as will making sure all doors and windows are locked. You also want to secure anything outside that could be affected by bad weather, such as grills, chairs and lawn ornaments.
Inside your home, unplug any devices that you don’t need to be powered up. Not only will unplugging microwaves, game consoles and computers protect them from a power surge, these typically use power even when turned off. You should also go through your refrigerator and throw out anything that will expire while you’re on your adventure vacation. Lastly, adjust your thermostat but don’t turn it off. Summer trips can leave you with an incredibly warm house, while winter trips can lead to frozen pipes.
